Germ Busters Academy Resource Development

e-Bug is developing Germ Busters Academy, a new activity-based educational resource designed for after-school settings to support children and young people in learning about infection prevention and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Project Overview

This project responds to identified gaps in existing resources for community-based learning environments. Following a needs assessment with after-school club facilitators, the project aims to create a tailored, engaging resource for children aged 5–16 that supports learning outside the classroom through interactive, play-based activities.

Key Project Activities

  • Resource development

Designing a play-based activity pack with age-appropriate content for children aged 5–11 and 11–16, incorporating both adapted and newly developed activities.

  • Pilot testing in after-school settings

Delivering the resource in after-school clubs by after-school club facilitators across England to assess usability and engagement in real-world settings.

  • Evaluation of impact

Measuring improvements in children’s knowledge of microbes, infection prevention, and antimicrobial resistance using pre- and post-session questionnaires, alongside facilitator feedback.

  • Resource refinement

Using evaluation findings to improve content, design, and usability prior to final release.

  • Launch and promotion

Making the resource freely available via the e-Bug website and promoting it through digital channels and partnerships with organisations supporting after-school care.

Impact and Purpose

The project aims to improve awareness and understanding of hygiene, infection prevention, and antimicrobial resistance among children and young people, helping to encourage positive health behaviours from an early age.

Collaboration

The resource is developed in collaboration with after-school providers and stakeholders, ensuring it is practical, accessible, and suited to informal learning environments.

Looking Ahead

Following pilot testing and refinement, the Germ Busters Academy resource will be widely disseminated to after-school settings, and made available on the e-Bug website in July 2026; supporting broader engagement with infection prevention education beyond the classroom.
